Amitabh Bachchan and Amrita Singh star in the romantic drama, Mard. The film tells the story of a lonely widower Gyan whose life begins to take on new meaning when he meets Shanti, an optimistic young woman with a talent for writing. The film is directed by Sujoy Ghosh and features songs composed by A.R. Rahman who also plays the lead guitar in one of the songs making it one of Rahman's rare musical Bollywood films. This is all set against the backdrop of Punjab’s tumultuous history with its changing borders that took place after independence from India in 1947 followed by partition which split Kashmir between two countries (India and Pakistan). "Mard" is the story of Gyan (Amitabh Bachchan), a lonely widower, whose stoic life suddenly takes on new meaning when he meets Shanti, an optimistic young woman with a talent for writing. Through her innate joy of life, her liveliness and enthusiasm she becomes Gyan's ray of hope. Mard's story is set against the backdrop of Punjab’s tumultuous history with its changing borders that took place after independence from India in 1947 followed by partition which split Kashmir between two countries (India and Pakistan). Through a series of events Gyan and Shanti become husband and wife but soon they part ways yet again as she realizes that their union was not fated to be. Gyan then travels across the country in search of a new path into Shanti's life. What follows is a heart-warming journey of discovery, truth and hope.Principal photography for Mard began on 20 December 2008 in Jaipur, Rajasthan. The last leg of filming was held in Delhi from 27 March to 31 March 2009. The original soundtrack was composed by A.R. Rahman, while lyrics were penned by Gulzar and Daboo Malik apart from the song Dard Karaara being written by Suhail Kaul and sung by Mohit Chauhan with a music score mixed by Eric Pillai. It was released on 4 September 2008. It was followed by the original music album of the film, "Mard (Remix)". The soundtrack features two songs written by A.R. Rahman; "Kiss Me" and "Dard Karaara". Alka Yagnik and Shreya Ghoshal sing these two songs while A. R. Rahman plays the lead guitar in one of them (alongside Shankar Mahadevan). The soundtrack also features two songs written by Gulzar; "Roop Ki Rani" and "Jewels of Menaka. The song "Roop Ki Rani" is sung by Sunidhi Chauhan, Mahalakshmi Iyer and Shankar Mahadevan. The melody of the song "Jewels of Menaka" is based on the Todi Raga and is sung by Palak Muchhal and Pallavi Sharda. Roop Ki Rani was used as the official soundtrack promo track for the film. Initially set for a 25 May 2008 release, it was delayed due to post-production work and released on 2 September 2008 to mostly positive reviews from critics as well as mixed reviews from audience. cfa1e77820
